Joan Spears is the much beloved owner of Pleasant Pottery, located in the Eglinton & Mount Pleasant community. She has been working with clay for over 35 years; and yet it has not diminished her pleasure in seeing new forms emerge from a lump of clay.
After losing her graphic design job in 1996, Joan joined a pottery collective, with fifteen other women. Soon after, she opened Mount Pleasant Pottery. This is where I met Joan, over four years ago. I met her during one of her four week introductory pottery training courses.
In her studio Joan teaches six days a week, and enjoys passing on her excitement and joy to a large group of students. She also encourages her more experienced potters by offering them the opportunity to sell their work twice a year. Joan has often noted that the joy that she finds in her work has been the number one reason why she has yet to retire.
