Joan Spears is the much beloved owner of Pleasant Pottery, located in the Eglinton and Mount Pleasant community. She has been working with clay for over 35 years; and yet it has not diminished her pleasure in seeing new forms emerge from a lump of clay.
After losing her graphic design job in 1996, Joan joined a pottery collective, with fifteen other women. Soon after, she opened Mount Pleasant Pottery. This is where I met Joan, over four years ago. I met her during one of her four week introductory pottery training courses.
In her studio Joan teaches six days a week, and enjoys passing on her excitement and joy to a large group of students. She also encourages her more experienced potters by offering them the opportunity to sell their work twice a year. Joan has often noted that the joy that she finds in her work has been the number one reason why she has yet to retire. So, should you consider taking up pottery, please visit Joan at Pleasant Pottery!
